Peggy's Pregnancy Question
Mad Men is a great show, but there are some plot points that are a bit too obscure. I still can't figure out what happened with Peggy's baby. Did she give it to a stranger or did her sister adopt the baby? I know the sister was pregnant at the same time, so what happened?

I really thought her sister had taken the baby until the season two finale, when Peggy told Pete she had given the child up. The way she said it, I thought she had given the baby to a stranger, and I honestly think she was completely coming clean to Pete at that moment.

Me too, but a recent interview with one of the actors has me confused. The actor who plays pete says that the sister has the baby.

I thought, by "giving up" she meant "giving it to her sister".

I think that the ending was a little ambiguous though.

Her sister has the baby.

At the end of the second season Peggy told Pete that she gave her baby away. At the beginning of the season it looked like Peggy's sister was watching her baby for her because she didn't want it. I guess those scenes were just made to show how uncomfortable Peggy was around children, especially after getting pregnant and having a baby unexpectedly.

Matt Weiner has said that Peggy's sister is not taking care of her baby she had with Pete. So I guess she really did give it up for adoption.

I'm confuzzled, because the actor who plays Pete said in an interview that the baby was with Peggy's sister. Now, actor's often mis-remember plot points, so I idn't know whether to take this at face value. It's also possible that Peggy is a lying liar who lies. She may have been trying to put Pete off of her completely by admitting to such an act when she probably knows (through office gossip) that he is having trouble concieving with his wife.

Yeah, I think Kartheiser was wrong. At least right now, we are supposed to understand that the baby is her sister's baby, and her's and Pete's baby is gone.

That's interesting Vincent said the baby is with Peggy's sister.

Well I guess I'll choose to go with what Matt says since he's runs the show. Hopefully we will find out if it is with her family or has been adopted.

I wonder is Vincelt accidentally gave away a spoiler...

Thanks! I guess that the definitive answer unless that's a Ron Moore-esque smokescreen.

They made it seem like Peggy's sister was taking care of the baby, but they show in the flashback scene in "The New Girl" that she was pregnant with her own child.

I always thought her sister was taking care of the baby. It would have been interesting if her sister had a miscarriage and adopted Peggy's baby. That's for Soaps though.

The state of New York took the baby away from her because she was all in denial about the baby. The writers wanted you to think her sister had the baby at first but what happened was the baby was taken away from her.

In one of the early episodes Peggy says "I'm capable of making my own decisions."

and then her mother replies "The state of New York didn't seem to think so."

But couldn't her mother's comment also have meant that she was involuntarily committed to a mental hospital and therefore deemed not be able to make her own decisions? (Because she was in denial about the pregnancy/ child.) Perhaps she consented to the adoption later on when she was deemed mentally fit? (Whatever that meant in the 60's!)

I think that's the fun of the show. All/ any of these interpretations could make sense!

She gave the baby to the State of New York. Anita is raising her own children.

I think it's mostly resolved (at least as much as this subtle show allows, up to this point) but I understood it as we weren't supposed to be exactly certain what happened--whether the sister lost her baby and therefore adopted Peggy's, or if the state took Peggy's baby and her new nephew/niece serves only to make her uncomfortable.

This.

I think they do this on purpose to leave possible plot lines open for the future.

Here's another: is Pete really a Campbell? There's a scene where he & Bud are signing papers with their mom after their dad's death and his mom refers to something his dad said and he pointedly says, "My father?, Well, your husband spent all your money." or words to that effect. Mrs. Campbell also makes mention of how different Pete & Bud are ("Salt & Pepper"). It could mean that Pete was a love child. They dropped it, but could pick it back up later at some point.

In an interview, Matt Weiner said that the baby her sister was taking care of was NOT Peggy's. He wanted to lead us to believe it was Peggy's baby, but that if you pay attention to the actual dialogue, there's nothing to explicitly state that it's Peggy's baby. Those scenes were mainly there to illustrate how Peggy is now just cripplingly uncomfortable around all children (which I think is actually more depressing).

Where is the interview with Matthew Weiner?
I keep hearing that he said she gave the baby up, but no one links to the interview. The interviews I've read are all pretty ambiguous, just like the plot.

Okay, so if that baby isn't Peggy's, what about the scene where the priest gave her the egg "for the little one"?
bazookkajoe on August 19th, 2009 10:39 pm (UTC)
Because Peggy's sister told Father Gill in confession that Peggy had a child out of wedlock. He doesn't know that she gave it away.

There's the link to the interview where Matt Weiner clears up the confusion.
